On Saturday, the final journey of former US President Jimmy Carter began in South Georgia. His flag-draped casket was escorted by former and current Secret Service agents who served as pallbearers, starting at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus.

The motorcade will pass through Carter's hometown of Plains and his childhood home, before heading to Atlanta. Then, the motorcade will pause at the Georgia State Capitol for the public to pay their respects.

On Tuesday, January 7, Carter's body will be transported from Atlanta to Washington, D.C., where it will lie in state at the US Capitol. Public visitation will be available until midnight on Wednesday. On Thursday, January 9, the motorcade will return to Georgia, where a private funeral service will be held at Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains. Carter will be laid to rest beside his wife at 5:20 p.m. that day, following a private interment ceremony.
