Austrian Chancellor Nehammer to resign after coalition talks fail

Austrian Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced on Saturday that he will step down in the coming days following the failure of coalition talks to form a new government. This marks the second time negotiations have broken down.

"We have negotiated long and honestly. On essential points, no agreement is possible with the SPO. The People’s Party stands by its promises: we will not agree to anti-performance and anti-economic measures or new taxes. Therefore, we are ending negotiations with the SPO and will not resume them," Nehammer said in X.

"It is obvious that the destructive forces within the SPO have gained the upper hand," Nehammer said, stressing the importance of staying true to his party's values.
